A new proficiency-based textbook for teaching Modern Standard Arabic to beginners
Arabic Links is a communicative, proficiency-based, textbook, with an abundance of task-based activities that focus on the four skills (reading, speaking, writing, and listening), and includes a strong emphasis on culture. This textbook is designed as a flexible instrument of instruction in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which also contains segments introducing aspects of four colloquial dialects as elements of linguistic culture. Designed to be covered in at least four semesters (at four to five contact hours per week), Arabic Links has two volumes, each with six units, plus an introductory unit (in volume one) on the alphabet, basic greetings, and personal information.
Each unit is divided into clearly marked lessons, plus vocabulary lists and dialogue reviews, and each lesson is designed to be covered in one or two 50-minute class sections and each lesson focuses on one of the four skills. Each unit is structured around a semantic field, and there is emphasis on active acquisition of the vocabulary central to that field.
Using this textbook, students will gain active mastery of a wide range of vocabulary in an array of general contexts or situations. The book also provides a glossary of vocabulary, appendices for grammatical reviews, and a comparative summary of the distinctive features of four main dialects.
John Eisele is associate professor of Arabic Studies at William & Mary College.
Driss Cherkaoui is associate professor of Arabic Studies and Arabic Studies Program Director at William & Mary College. He also directs the Tangier Summer Arabic Language Program (TSALP) for the American Institute for Maghrib Studies in Tangier, Morocco.
