Desmond O’Grady

Desmond O’Grady studied Arabic literature with Professor Mohammed Bakir Alwan at Harvard University while taking his doctorate there as a teaching fellow. He also taught in Paris and Rome, and at the American University in Cairo and Alexandria University. Regarded as a major presence in contemporary Irish poetry, he has published sixteen collections of his own poetry, including The Road Taken: New and Selected Poems 1956–1996. As a translator of poetry he has published nine collections including Ten Modern Arab Poets and Trawling Tradition, published in 1994.
