JOHN BAINES is professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford and has held university appointments in Egypt, England, France, and the United States. He has published a number of works on ancient Egypt and was coeditor of Civilizations of the Ancient Near East (4 volumes, 1995). JAROMIR MALEK holds a doctorate in Egyptology from Charles University, Prague. He has published a number of books on ancient Egypt and is editor of the Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs, and Paintings at the Griffith Institute.
