Screening of Ronnie Close’s documentary on Cairo’s Ultras – February 11

On February 11, Ronnie Close, writer, filmmaker, assistant professor of visual media at AUC, and author of Cairo’s Ultras: Resistance and Revolution in Egypt’s Football Culture (AUC Press, 2019), will discuss his documentary More Out of Curiosity, about Cairo’s Al Ahly football team, with AUC assistant professor of film Terri Ginsberg.

More Out of Curiosity is a film work drawing on documentary narratives to frame the capacity of resistance in social movements. It is constructed from video footage drawn from a number of sources, including the Al-Ahly Ultras themselves who shared their unique video archive material. The assemblage of images of street protests, football games, riots, and banner making helps stitch together a narrative to expose their local subculture in an overlapping meta-documentary format.

The screening and discussion will be held at AUC Tahrir, in Hill House 601, from 6:30pm–9:00pm.  This event is being hosted by AUC’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences.  It is open to the public. (Photo ID is required).
