Reem Bassiouney Wins the 2024 Sheikh Zayed Book Award

Esteemed Egyptian writer Reem Bassiouney, the author of Mortal Designs (AUC Press, 2016), was awarded the 2024 Sheikh Zayed Book Award in the Literature category. 

Reem Bassiouney won the award for her novel Al Halwani: The Fatimid Trilogy, a work of historical fiction, the title Al-Halawani (“The Confectioner”), a reference to the Fatimid era, which gave the Egyptians many of their popular desserts. 

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award, organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, received a record-breaking 4,240 submissions from 74 countries, with winners from the UAE, Tunisia, Germany, Egypt, and China.
