Naguib Mahfouz Fund for Translations of Arabic Literature

On December 11, 2001, the AUC Press announced the establishment of the Naguib Mahfouz Fund, in support of its expanding publishing program of Arabic literature in translation.

The challenges and opportunities of publishing specialized literary translations at affordable prices require endowment subsidies for significant new publications for international distribution every year.
Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz, a long-time supporter of a special translation fund, said: “The establishment of such a fund by the AUC Press demonstrates the university’s dedication to enhancing Egypt’s educational and cultural diversity, and I hope that contemporary Arabic literature will gain much broader dissemination and recognition throughout the world.”

Welcoming the first contributions to the fund, Paul Hannon, Chairman of AUC’s Board of Trustees, said: “The Press is truly a jewel in AUC’s crown, and the generous support of the new publishing endowment is greatly appreciated.”

The goal for the endowment is to reach contributions totaling $1 million, and friends and supporters of Naguib Mahfouz and of the AUC Press are invited to contact the Director of the AUC Press or the AUC Development Office to become charter members of the new Naguib Mahfouz Fund for Translations of Arabic Literature.
